Elliott Bay Pizza Co. has been feeding the hungry masses for more than a decade on upper Queen Anne. For the past three years the pizza place has been owned by Nick Polimenakos, who also owns the adjacent Queen Anne Cafe, the nearby Flame Burgers (co-owned with his son), and Vera's in Ballard.

For some visitors, it's the subs more than the pizza that make this place a magnet. It all starts with the glorious bread, made in-house. You can taste the freshness as you sink your teeth past the light, crackling surface into its yielding core. When I eat a 6-inch sub, it's not unusual for me to feel a little peckish two or three hours later. Never been the case at Elliott Bay.

The hot meatball sub ($5.50) is incredibly satisfying, better than many with a $10 price tag in fancier restaurants. The marinara is deep and tomatoey, the moist meatballs teem with flavor and the ricotta and mozzarella hold it all together with just the right kick of melting cheesiness.

I'm also a fan of the chicken rosemary sub because the garlic butter and fresh rosemary really pick up the chicken breast, not to mention the Alfredo sauce, mushrooms and mozzarella. Light and healthful it's not, but it's delicious and filling.

It is unusual combos like that that also differentiate this place from so many sub joints. Other less-than-usual offerings include the London broil ($5.50), featuring garlic butter (yup!), steak sauce, roast beef, green peppers and onions with mozzarella.

Vegetarian options include the grilled eggplant marinara sub and the vegatini pizza with fresh garlic, onions, red and green peppers, mushrooms, eggplant and tomatoes.

When I lived up on QA, there was a time when I basically lived on the turkey grinder. Hot turkey, cheese, olives... and a nice roll. The six inch is big, and if you get the footlong it's definitely leftover worthy. I never had their pizza, but oh man, I miss those sandwiches. I lived close by, would call in my order, and it would be ready. The staff was always nice, and my order was always right. Shit, I miss that place.

I've never had a bad experience at Elliot Bay. Their hot, toasty subs are the best. I usually like getting something with marinara sauce and tons of veggies. You can add almost any topping that you want and their prices are reasonable. A friend of mine placed an order there once and found a hair in her food which completely grossed her out. I'm willing to chalk that up to a singular occurance just because I love this place so much. This is a very good alternative to some of the stuffier, more expensive options in Queen Anne.

By far the pioneers of the toasted sub! I've actually never had a pizza from there, because ever since having their Chicken Caesar toasted sub, I won't have it any other way. Really, it sounds a little wierd, but chicken caesar sub is the way to go. The have a few tables if you'd like to stay, or get it to go!  If you're watching the football game, don't get up... they deliver. Hearty subs at expected prices.
